I was unable to play in this crucial game as I came down with a sinus infection.  However, I was able to hear from one of my teammates that we lost by three points.  This team was known for its three point shooting and ability to get out on the fast break.  I was glad to hear that our team put up a fight and almost won the game.

Next week we will face Gray team and I believe that it will be our last regular season game before the playoffs.

Tonight’s game was a bit hard to understand at points.  After coming off our blowout win against Red team I was expecting more of the same up-tempo, hard-nosed defensive play for this game.  We started off playing well and got out to an early lead with Jake P. hitting 4-4 from behind the arc.  Our defense was good, however, we did not convert as we turned the ball over.  Also their team was hitting their three-pointers and we ended the half only up by two points.

In the second half, we continued to turn the ball over and leave their shooters open and they ended up taking a four point lead with about 10 minutes left in the game.  We took a quick time-out to regroup and regained our composure and played our style of play.  We made some crucial free throws down the stretch and were able to come out with the win.  The final score was 57-54.

I had a bit of a slow start as I went 1-4 shooting, but I made a crucial driving layup with about 40 seconds left in the game to put us up three points.  Everything did not go as smoothly as last week’s game, but it was a good challenge for us to persevere through some poor play and be able to hold onto the win.  So far our season record is 3-2.

After last week’s loss against white, we were ready for our game against red.  This was the first game that we had our entire squad and we were ready to see how we work together as a team.  We got out of the gates running as we played great defense and got a lot of easy layups.  We started off with a 7-0 run with our fast tempo offense.  Red team was missing one of their star players, who gets to the bucket regularly.  By the end of the half we had a comfortable 30 point lead.

During the second half, our team got on fire from behind the arc.  One of players, Jake Potelka, hit three straight three pointers and ended the game with 20 points.  We continued to get easy transition buckets and played great team ball.  By the end of the game the score was 110-57.

I played my best game of the season scoring 8 points shooting 3-6 from the field.  I also had two assists.  I’m glad that we were able to mesh well as a team as we had a bit more rhythm and fluidity playing together.

Today was my first lower body workout for the life challenge.  I worked out three main leg groups: quads, hamstrings, and calves.  After the workouts my legs were shaking (in a good way) and I felt like it was a good workout.  Also I did some ab exercises and know that tomorrow I’ll be feeling it.  So far the challenge has been going great and I’m feeling better already.

(After this blog entry I won’t be posting about the Body for life challenge on a daily basis, but will update on significant milestones and even challenges.)

Day 2 has arrived!  Yesterday’s workout was great and I was ready for today’s 20 min. cardio workout.  I decided to exercise on the stationary bike and started at a leisurely pace.  Each progressive minute I pushed my intensity limit to a 9 out of 10.  I did this in for 3 sets.  Then the last set instead of stopping at intensity level 9 I pushed it till a level 10 for a whole minute.  My legs were moving at a frenetic pace and my heart was racing.  I finally finished as cooled down for the last minute as sweat was dripping down my face.

After getting off the bike, my legs were shaky.  I never realized that just doing 20 minutes of cardio could be that intense!  Week 1 is going well so far and I look forward to continuing this journey.

Today was the first day of my 12 week journey of a fitness program that I recently discovered called “Body for Life.”  It focuses on eating right and training intensely in two ways: weight training and cardio.  Today’s workout routine was the upper body and it was very challenging.

Usually when I went to the gym I spent a lot of time resting between sets, but this program emphasizes reaching high intensity points with little to no breaks (usually 1 or 2 min. rest).

Each major muscle group (chest, back, shoulders, triceps, biceps) is exercised for a total of 6 sets.  The first five sets utilize the same exercise, but the last set is a different exercise.  For example: for the chest I did five sets of bench press with the last high intensity set being dumbbell flies.  The suggested time of completion for the entire workout is 46 minutes, but I ended up finishing at 58 minutes.  Though I wasn’t able to reach the 46 min. mark this is a vast improvement from my previous 1 hr. 45 min. workouts.

After the workout I felt great.  It was a hard exercise routine, but it really got my blood flowing and I could barely lift my arms above my head.  If anyone is interested in checking out this fitness plan go to bodyforlife.com .  There are a lot of free resources and general information about the program.  If you start the program let me know and we can help encourage one another along the way!

After sitting out last game with a bruised heel, I was excited to play in today’s game.  My foot was still a bit tender, but I felt like I was at 70% health so I decided to play.  The roster of the White team had a lot of good outside shooters and a 6’6” center who also had a big body.  We knew that we would have some match up problems with him especially since our center was unable to play today.

The game started as we expected with the White team feeding it down low to their big man and he was able to finish almost all of his shots.  But we were able to keep the game close with our precision shooting from behind the arc.  However, every time we scored a three the white team matched it.  By the end of the half the game we were down by 10.

At the start of the second half, white team were able to get a couple easy lay ups and we were getting cold from downtown.  We continued to play hard and physical, but the lead continued to grow.  The final score was 74-57.   Though we lost this game, I felt like we had the best ball movement and team chemistry so far.   We played hard until, had fun and no one got injured.  In the end that is what it is all about.

I had no points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists.  Though I didn’t score I felt like I contributed well to the team and had fun out on the court.  Also I have a lot more confidence in my game than I did last year.  And I’m just grateful to be able to play this awesome sport of basketball.   Getting injured makes one realize what a gift it is to be able to play this game.  I want to continue to have the right attitude as I play and keeping working hard.  Thank you Lord, for the gift of basketball!
